Craven House Report 1956

For the first time since the beginning of house history, Craven has built up a house strong enough to compete evenly against the other houses and has crowned her performances with resounding and glorious victories in two consecutive terms this year.
Many new boys have joined us in the past terms and 1 would like to welcome them to the house, for it is on our present junior and middle school boys that the future of the house depends - so "Good Luck" to all of you.
SPORTS EVENTS.
Running. The winter term this year brought along the Inter House mountain races and relays. First came the senior event which meant a most gruelling run to the top and down again after a three minute rest. A fine race was run by our three runners giving us a team victory by a short margin. Following this came the relay races. Both our teams ran extremely well though we could only manage second place.

Boxing. There were many outstanding fights in which our boys showed tremendous courage and determination.

Rugby. In this house competition, our seniors, although not a strong teams managed to beat Lancaster but were closely beaten by York in a fast game. The combined team of middle and junior boys followed a similar pattern by beating York but losing to Lancaster.

Football. Here we were outstandingly successful. Both seniors and the combined XI won every match.

The seniors, first of all, most certainly deserved to win by their superior ball control. As it was only 7 a-side one can see the importance of good positional play which Craven exploited to the best advantage.

Results. Craven 1, York 0. Craven 3, Lancaster 0.

Now the middle and junior team. These chaps played like champions, superior in every way to their opponents. It is only surprising that the opposition escaped with such a small goal tally as, York, O-Craven 5. Lancaster O-Craven 4.

Indoor games. Such indoor activities as volley-ball, hand-ball, chess. billiards, table tennis etc. were played throughout the term, and 1 think it is true to say that we did quite well indeed in them all. The most outstanding game, as I look back, was the middle schooll handball. Although handicapped by size, our lads went on to win both games in typical Craven fashion.
Marathon. This was held on Tuesday March the 13th. There was good running by all the competitors. The Craven boys ran most successfully, winning the junior, middle school and senior events. Blakey, who won the junior marathon, and Sugden, second in the seniors, were the only Craven boys to gain a position in the first three, but nevertheless, good teamwork pulled us through, enabling us to carry off the 1956 marathon.
Results. The first 7 in each house were chosen as the teams.
At the time of going to press the house cricket matches have not been played but fortunately I am able to mention the sports-day. Four cups were presented by Mrs. John Mayor, three to the best individual perfomances and one to the winning house. The senior trophy was won jointly by N. Hayat and James Mayor, the middle, school cup by Anthony Knaggs and the junior cup went to Barber.
Champions of the day were Craven who received the big trophy which the house captain accepted.
Lastly I would like to thank Lancaster and York for a very exciting and sporting afternoon and wish them on behalf of Craven the best of luck for the future.
