Craven House Report 1957

Last year in my report 1 mentioned the importance of our Middle and junior School in all House activities. With our present Senior School strength greater emphasis has been placed on these lads' efforts and 1 am pleased to write that they have done an excellent job showing courage and determination in all they have attempted.
CHRISTMAS TERM.
Boxing. The boys showed tremendous spirit and enthusiasm and many were disappointed when bouts were unable to be found for their weight. But the team of Barrett, Rogers, Yates, Stackhouse, Bate, Wood, Brunyate and Job, fought gamely and we pride ourselves in the fact that we not only came equal first with Lancaster but also obtained the "Best Losers" cup for the second time through S. Bate.

Rugby. The first leg of the two-term competition was held this Christmas term.

Our Middle and junior team showed their metal by winning both their matches and the seniors defeated Lancaster and held York to a draw.

EASTER TERM.
Rugby. All were eager to play again this term as we were now favourites for the cup as a result of last-term's efforts. Once again our Middle and junior Boys did not let us down and the Seniors once again beat Lancaster but lost to York. So on the average Craven won the competition and so hold the cup for a year.
Shrove Tuesday Scramble. This is a new competition in which the three groups, Senior, Middle and Junior, each had to fight for and secure as big a piece of pancake as possible. In the juniors the smallest boy in the House, Turner ii, managed to win by producing a piece of enormous size. Our Middle School lads failed to hold the pancake while in the Seniors the House Captain won.
Mixed Soccer. Ground conditions were awful and further discomfort was provided by a bitterly cold wind and rain. As a result our smaller boys were unable to control the ball. Nevertheless, we won both games by 2 goals to nil.
Marathon. This was run in the three school groups. All the boys ran fine races and we were only closely beaten on the average. In the juniors our first seven home were Roberts, Moorhouse, Wood, Tattersall, Parker, Turner ii, enabling us to gain first place. Our Middle School seven were Rogers, Morton, Stackhouse, Barrett, Smith iii, Wilkinson and Catton, gaining us second place ; and our Seniors, Riley ii, Mayor, Woodhouse, Dawood ii, Catlow, Sykes ii and Sykes 1, giving us third place.
Gym Games. In all of these we were able to hold our own and to gain valuable House points.
SUMMER TERM.
Sports Day. For the second time in succession we won the team cup and also managed to win two Victor Ludorums through N. Rogers and the House Captain. An interesting point is that in the Pnior and Middle Schools we also had the runners-up for the individual cups through J. Roberts and N. Morton.
Cricket. At the time of going to press we have so far had our matches with Lancaster House, both of which we have won, and are looking forward to our matches with York.
Swimming. We are at the moment the holders of the Swimming Cup. It is being competed for this year at a later date and so a report is not possible. However, I can add that our swimmers will put up a fine show.
Now finally a word to Lancaster and York thanking them on behalf of the houses for the many keen and sporting tussles we have had together. I wish them luck in the future and look forward to a renewal of "Battle" next year.
J. Mayor (House Captain).
