Craven House Report 1959

Craven have done very well this year, especially so in the Summer Term, when we won the Swimming and Athletic Cups, and tied with York for the Cricket Cup.
RUGBY. We were unable to repeat last year's success, when we won the Cup. In the Senior League we lost every match, although the juniors redeemed us in a small way, by gaining some measure of success. The main drawback of the Senior ieam was that it lacked weight, though it certainly did not lack spirit. Credit should be given to Catlow, Roberts, Smith P., and Wilkinson, all of whom played very well.
SOCCER. During the bad weather in the Spring Term, we played in the House Soccer League. The Seniors now came into their own, for they beat Lancaster 3-1 and York 4-1. The Juniors also beat York, but lost to Lancaster.

MARATHON. We entered this event with an almost un changed team from last year, but unfortunately we did not do quite so well and came third.

BOXING. This year's team consisted of D. Smith, White ii, job, White i, Schofield ii, Birkbeck i, White iv, Wood, and Hay i. All the team fought very well, and there were some very good fights. Smith, White ii, Wood and Birkbeck won their fights.
SWIMMING. We won the Swimming Cup once again, to make it four times running. The seniors did very much better this year, and.gained 24 very useful points. Wilbnson and Schofield both swam well, and together won the Senior Diving.
The Middle School also did well, with Wood, Caul, Blay and Palmer gaining first places. In the juniors, White ii and Kenyon also gained firsts.
In the Relays we came third in the Seniors, but first in the Middle and junior. In the Grand Relay we were second to Lancaster.
ATHLETICS. Craven put a great fight and won the cup. Our main strength lay in the Middle School, most of our points being gained by them, particularly by Wilkinson, Kenyon and Rogers who gained his third Victor Ludorum.
The juniors also did well, with Birkbeck i and Haighton tying for the Junior Victor Ludorum. The Seniors were not as successful and only had four finalists.
CRICKET. Here again the Juniors gained most of the glory, by winning both their matches. The Seniors beat Lancaster, but lost to York. Against Lancaster, Catlow was top scorer, with 27, out of a total of 47, and also the best bowler, for he obtained a hat trick without a run being scored against him. Against York, the batting collapsed, and only some determined defence by Woodhouse and Sykes saw the total past 60. When York batted though, our bowlers were not so effective, and we lost by five wickets.
