This has been quite a good
year for we started at a disadvantage by having only six
seniors. We kept our hold on the athletics cup, and won
the new cup for "work." We lost the swimming cup however,
and our "half" of the cricket cup. |
|
RUGBY: During this
season we played only two sets of matches and this took
place during the autumn term only. Our seniors had a very
good season and won all four of the matches. Our juniors
did not do so well; -they lost all four. In the seniors
our strength was in the three-quarter line, and we were
very good in the attack. The tackling in defence though
was not up to standard except for White i who was a very
good and safe tackler. |
October 2nd v. York.
Score : Seniors won 12-8. Juniors lost 11-0.
Scorers : Hay 3 tries, Roberts 1 try - no conversions.
SENIORS: This was a very close game. York had a
better pack who played very well in the loose. Craven on
the other hand had a better three quarter line.
The first try was scored by Hay but York soon took the
lead, their try (scored by Leakey) being converted by
Stroud. After half time York again scored making the score
8-3. Then came two quick tries by Hay, both of which were
not converted. With about 5 minutes to go Roberts scored a
wonderful try taking the score to 12-8. The team played
much better than last season, notable players being Yates,
P. Smith and Barrett.
JUNIORS: This was rather a disappointing game.
Craven forwards never got the ball back. This game gave
our three-quarters no scope. White i saved a greater
defeat by his very good tackling.
October 9th v. Lancaster.
Score : Seniors won 14-6. juniors lost 11-0
Scorers : Seniors, Hay 2 tries ; Barrett 1 try ; Roberts 1
conversion and 1 try.
This was again a very close game, but not quite so close
as against York. Lancaster opened the score first with a
penalty goal, dropped by Ardern. Very soon after I.
Schofield scored for Lancaster giving them a 6-0 lead
after 15 minutes play. Craven opened their scoring with
two tries by Hay one of which was converted by Roberts.
This gave Craven an 8-6 lead at half-time. In the second
half Craven were nearly on top and Barrett and Hay scored
two unconverted tries giving a final score of 14-6 to
Craven.
White i playing at full back, played a very good game,
stopping both Schofield and Pallister from scoring what
looked like certain tries. |
|
JUNIORS:
Another heavy defeat was inflicted on our Juniors. The
reason again a small scrum and not very good tacklers in
our three-quarter line.
October 20th v. Lancaster (Seniors)
v. York (juniors).
Score: Seniors won 31-16. juniors lost 24-0.
Scorers : P. Smith 3 tries ; D. Hay 2 tries J. Roberts 1
try A. Schofield 1 try; J. Roberts 5 conversions. |
SENIORS: Craven
played very well to gain such a victory over Lancaster
even though Lancaster were without I. Schofield who
couldn't play.
The weather was ideal for Rugby and our three-quarters
made full use of the fact. P. Smith and Roberts played
very well, and made full use of the ball, which was pushed
out to them from the scrum, quickly and clearly by
Barrett, and by half time we were leading by 18-3.
After half-time Bushell moved back to full back for
Lancaster, and they came into the attack and soon lowered
the score to 21-16. Craven then started to fight and the
game finished a 31-16 victory to us. |
October 26th v. York
(Seniors). - v. Lancaster (juniors).
Score : Seniors won 13-3. juniors lost 0-51.
Scorers : Hay 2 tries ; Roberts 1 try and 2 conversions.
This was another good game. Craven scored a try soon after
the start of the game. Barrett got the ball quickly to
Roberts, who ran through and dropped the ball down, near
the post. He then converted it. At half time the score was
5-0 to Craven. After half time we kept up the attack and
scored again. Roberts again converted. Not long afterwards
we again scored but was not converted. Near the end of the
game A. R. Dawood scored a good try for York, from a close
line out.
Our forwards did not get as much of the ball as usual, but
in the loose Yates and Catlon played very well. In the
three-quarters P. Smith played very well considering he
had received a slight back injury on Wednesday. |
CRICKET. This year
Craven set out with high hopes of winning the cricket cup.
This was not to be. We underestimated Lancaster.
Our first match was against York. In the match, both our
seniors and juniors won. Because of an infringment of the
age limit our juniors had to play again, but we still won.
v. York Seniors.
In this senior match, Barrett was our highest scorer, with
a very good 23. M. H. Dawood scored 19 and did all that an
opening batsman should do.
In the second junior match, the runs were scored by
Sedaghat, White ii and Kenyon. This match was won by seven
wickets.
Our next match was against Lancaster. Both our senior and
junior teams were beaten : the juniors by 30 runs and the
seniors by one wicket.
In the seniors, Craven won the toss and decided to bat.
Our wickets started to fall almost at once. M. H. Dawood
was out quickly, and Barrett was out first ball. At one
time the score stood at 4 for 3 the four being four bye's.
When Sedagat went into bat and Haigh joined him, our score
began to mount slowly. Sedaghat scored a good 18 not out.
Craven were out for 33.
Lancaster went into bat and the wickets went down even
more quickly, at one time they were 24 for 9. But Hitchcox
saved the day and scored the remaining 10 runs.
In the juniors ' match, Kenyon bowled very well, but
Lancaster made 71 runs. Craven went into bat but only
scored 28 runs. |
|
SPORTS. Craven again
won the Sports Cup. This was mainly due to our strong
middle school team led by Kenyon. In the middle school
track events, except hurdles, out of the three runners in
each race two were from Craven. Kenyon broke the middle
javelin record with a throw of 113 feet. In the seniors,
Barrett surprised everyone by winning the long jump with a
jump of 16 ft. 9 in. |
MARATHON. This year
there were two marathons. One for points and one for the
marathon cup. Craven narrowly won the "points" marathon
but the "cup" marathon went to Lancaster.
Our seniors' team did not shine. Our best was Hay who came
fifth in the "points," and fourth in the "cup." In each
case Catton was one place behind.
In the middle school White ii starred, he came second in
both marathons, a very good feat indeed.
In the juniors, our strength lay in Harron i and Birkbeck
i who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. |
SWIMMING. This year
Craven decided on a change of policy. We decided to let
another house win the swimming cup for a change.
This year York and Lancaster were a little bit too good
for us, especially in the senior and junior events.
Schofield ii swam very well and won both the 50 yds and
100 yds. breast stroke. Palmer won the 100 yds. free style
and came 2nd in the 50 yds. free style.
The star of Craven was definitely Chester, for though he
only swam in the 50 yds. free style, he broke the record
by swimming the two lengths of the baths in 28.8 secs.
This is only .6 of a second behind Schofield's 50 yds.
record. |
|
BOXING. In this
year's boxing all three houses ended up with equalpoints.
Among Craven's boxers, three stand out for different
reasons. White i : Because he won the cup for the best
boxer. White ii: Because he knocked out Emery. Turner II :
Because he won the best loser's cup. |
WORK. For the first
time this year prizes were awarded for each subject in the
Senior, Middle and junior Schools.
Job and White iii won two prizes each. Coltart i won one.
A cup was awarded to the house which won the most prizes.
Craven won this cup.
Next term you will have a new house captain, John Catton.
I hope you will continue to give of your best as you have
always done. |
