RUGBY: Due to the lack of seniors in the school, we
have played all our house matches using people from forms upto
and including the upper fourth. We played five house matches
and they were as follows . .
1st February, 1961. Craven v. York: Although York
appeared to have the bigger side, we often Tanaged to get the
ball out of the scrum to the backs, but it was just not their
day. Watson i played well and always managed to hook the ball.
Caul finally got a good pass and scored for Craven. During the
second half Craven played well in the forwards but the backs
needed some practice. Henderson ii and White iii played well
but could not stop the onslaught of York.
Craven 3 v. York 25.
15th February, 1961. Craven v. Lancaster: This was a
better game as the team was playing "together." The scrum had
been reformed and managed to get the ball out quickly. Wood
managed to score three tries and converted two. Our attack was
in the threequarters and it was not long before Kenyon, the
captain, scored two tries. Haigh also scored a try.
Henderson and Watson did well to keep Lancaster off our line.
Score: Craven 25, Lancaster 15.
22nd February, 1961. Craven v. Lancaster: Craven played
very well to get this victory. Haigh and Kenyon both scored
two tries each. Robertson was very unlucky not to score,
because he was always brought down just before the line. Cane
scored half way through the second half and we won 19-14.
1st March, 1961. Craven v. York: This was one match
where we badly needed weight in the scrum. , Because of this
York were able to get the ball back to their threequarters,
and steadily mounted their score.
Craven tried hard all the time although they grew very tired
during the second half. Kenyon finally did get a chance to
score but was unable to convert it.
Craven 3, York 30.
5th March, 1961. Craven v. Lancaster: This proved to be
the fastest game they ever played. Both sides were playing
extremely well, although Craven got tired after the first
half. During the first half the Craven backs had a lot of the
ball, but were always stopped. By half-time Watson 2, Kenyon
and Haigh had all managed to score. During the second half,
Watson scored again, and Wood converted. Watson who came this
year has always done his best in Rugby, and has made himself a
valuable forward. Although the team played hard they did not
manage to win, but they might have done if their had been more
time.
14-16 to Lancaster.
Kenyon, Wood, Haigh, Caul and Watson played very hard in all
five matches
Team: Wood (scrum half), Henderson (full back), Masters (left
wing), Milner (right wing), Turner (left centre), Caul (right
centre), Kenyon (stand off), Hylton (lock), Watson ii (second
row), White iii (second row), Poole (prop), Lever (prop),
Watson i (hooker), Haigh and Robertson (wing forwards).

MARATHON: The marathon was held on Friday, 24th March.
It was different this year as we not only ran over a different
course. but instead of just a team running on behalf of the
house: all the house had to run. The scoring was done on the
basis of the first person home got 12 points, and then all
those home after the winner and within one third of his time
gained two points and those within two thirds one point.
Catton managed to come second gaining 11 points and he was
followed by White, i, who came 4th, Parker came in 8th and
White, ii, 9th. These four people helped Craven considerably
as they were able to gain valuable points. A number of people
tried hard, including Woodhouse 12th, Hylton 14th, Palmer
17th, Watson 18th, Poole 20th and Masters 23rd. It was due to
the combined effort of all the house that we were able to win
the Marathon Cup for the first time.
Craven 91 points, 1st.

SUMMER TERM. |
Because the magazine is being published earlier than usual, 1
am unable to mention any of the events that take place at the
end of term. 1 can only try and predict what may happen . We
have to play the cricket matches, and I hope that we will do
well as we have six members of Craven in the first XI. Craven
with a bit of luck stand a good chance of winning the House
Cup, but anything can happen. Craven 1 am sure will do their
best in all events, especially on Sports Day and during the
swimming events.
1 would like to finish my report by thanking both my school
and house prefects for all the help they have given me during
the past year. Craven will be sorry to lose P. Smith, who has
been a great help to us in the rugby and cricket. 1 would like
to thank both York and Lancaster for giving us such a good
opposition. We have always enjoyed playing against you
whatever the result. Lastly, next year you will have a new
house captain: Richard Yates. I hope that you will all help
him in every way possible and 1 also wish him the best of
luck. |
