Craven House Report 1962

AUTUMN TERM
RUGBY: This term the matches for the Rugby Cup started. Of the six matches played the Seniors were successful in all while the Juniors were rather outclassed. The Seniors beat York 14-0, Lancaster 9-3, York 12-6, Lancaster 6-6, York 9-6, and Lancaster 12-6. Of their games, the Juniors beat York 6-3.
Craven 14 pts., York 0.
Craven had a good team and, after ten minutes, Kenyon scored the first try. York retaliated and our line was hard pressed until half-time. After half-time a long kick by Kenyon found touch five yards from the York line, and Robertson took the ball over for the second try, which Watson ii converted. Fifteen minutes later there was a break-through in the centre and a try by Caul. Five minutes from time Sedaghat kicked a penalty.
Craven 6 pts., Lancaster 6 pts.
The match started well, with Kenyon scoring a try in the first three mintues ; the conversion was missed. The game then became very even, both sides getting the ball and opening the game up. just before half-time Buckley took the ball over for Lancaster's first try. The conversion was missed and at half-time the score was 3-3. In the middle of the second hald White i received the ball from a set scrum and scored. Just before full-time a good movement started by Moss and terminating in a try by Sayers made the score level.

FORM ORDERS.
The points gained in the Form Orders go towards the Work Cup. There were two Form Orders held this term, and in both Poole i and Reed gained first and third places in the Upper Fourth, while in the Lower Fourth Widdup headed the form each time and Bradley came second once. Sutherland gained second place in the Shell once.

GYM GAMES.
The teams were taken from Shell and Remove and although they were rather outclassed managed to get second place in the First set.
Teams: Handball and Volleyball-Barrett, Howorth, Peet i, Bredee, Sutherland, Docherty.

TABLE TENNIS.
In this, the first Table Tennis Tournament of its kind, Craven had quite a good team. Sedaghat and White i played both singles and doubles and ended first equal overall, while Wight and Sutherland got second place for the Juniors.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ.
This consisted of an eliminating round and a final. In the latter Craven was represented by Wood and Watson ii, who came first equal with Lancaster. Turner ii and Bredee, representing the Juniors, came third.

EASTER TERM
RUGBY: This term the House matches continued. The Seniors continued to play well and did not lose a match, but the juniors were no match for superior York and Lancaster teams. The Seniors beat York 12-8, Lancaster 9-3, York 3-0 and Lancaster 3-0.
Lancaster finally won the cup, and congratulations should go to their Juniors, who did not lose a match all season.
Craven 3 pts., York 0 pts.
Craven kicked off and in the first half the teams were even. There was quite a lot of open play. The second half started with no score ; it was not until late that Craven pushed over from a set scrum five yards out and scored the only try of the match. The conversion was n-iissed.
Summing up: Kenyon played well at fly-half, using the touch line intelligently, scoring a number of tries and stopping the opposition on many occasions. Sedaghat hooked very well; we got the ball from the scrum a lot of the time. Robertson, Watson and White ii played intelligently in the scrum; White i played well at scrumhalf. At full-back Parker saved our line many times. In the juniors main honours go to Reed, Turner ii, Henderson ii and Docherty, who practically held the team together.
I thank the two houses for these exciting games ; and our congratulations to Lancaster on winning the Cup.
FORM ORDERS: In the two Form Orders Poole i was first both times, with Reed and Hutchinson third for the Upper Fourth. In the Lower Fourth Widdup was first both times. In the first Order Chambers was second and Edwards ii third, giving Craven the first three places ; in the Second Order Owen was second. Sutherland took second place in the first Order.

TABLE TENNIS: Another Tournament was held and in it we gained first place in the Seniors and third in the Juniors. Credit goes to Sedaghat, who won all his games for the Seniors. White and Sedgahat played the single; Hutchinson and Watson ii the doubles. For the Juniors Wight and Cawthorn played the singles ; Poole ii and Cawthorn the doubles.

GYM GAMES: Two sets of Gym Games were played. For the first set the teams were chosen from the Junior Forms, and for the second from the Upper and Lower Fourth.
Teams :
Handball - Barrett, Poole ii, Peet i, Docherty, Wight, Cawthom.
Volleyball - Howorth, Barrett, Docherty, Cawthom, Peet i, Poole ii.
Handball - Turner ii, Lever, Bradley, Howard, Owen, Henderson ii.
Volleyball - Robertson, Reed, Truelove, Henderson ii, Lever, Turner ii.
In both sets of games we got third place.

MARATHON: In this event our runners proved no match for those of Lancaster, who won the Cup. There were, in the Junior team, a few outstanding performances, however. Turner ii and Barrett ran very well to come third and fourth ; Owen ran a good race also. For the Seniors White i gained fifth place; White ii and Parker also ran well.

PANCAKE SCRAMBLE: The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Scramble took place as usual and although the prizes were taken by Lancaster in the Seniors and York in the Juniors, it is an event that is enjoyed by all.

SUMMER TERM
At the time of going to press the Summer Sports have not been contested. I am making no forecast but our hopes are high. Before closing this report I should like to thank R. Sedaghat and W. White for their support throughout the year ; also the whole House for continually giving of its best. My thanks go to the other two House Captains for many interesting competitions during the year. Next term W. White will take charge of Craven and 1 am sure that he will be supported as well as I have been.
My thanks to you all for making my last year at Eshton my most enjoyable.
R. YATES.
