Craven House Report 1963

RUGBY.
Owing to the severe weather conditions in the Easter Term no house matches were played. However, in the Autumn Term we managed to play five House matches. Of the five matches we won two and lost three.
v. Lancaster, 27th September.
Seniors.
This was a very exciting match. Craven scored all their point in the first half, the scorers being Watson ii, Robertson i, and White i. In the second half Lancaster were always on the attack, but we managed to hold them and won 11-8.
v. York, 9th November.
Seniors.
This match was played in slippery conditions. The first score went to York. Not long after this Craven retaliated with a try by White i. In the second half York again scored first. Watson replied with a score for Craven. In the last few minutes of the game York scored again, and thus won the match 9-6.
The junior team played on the same day against York Juniors, and won 12-3. The scorers were Wight, Barrett and Fawcett. Fawcett, as captain, always gave of his best, and inspired the rest of the team with his good play.
We lost to Lancaster on the 30th November, but beat them in the return match a fortnight later. In this match Craven played strongly from the beginning. From a scrum on Lancaster's twentyfive yard line a good three-quarter movement ended with Whiie ii scoring our first try. Robertson i as a wing-forward played very well, and scored early in the first half. When the half-time whistle went the score was 9-9. The second half of the match was very strongly contested, but Craven managed to win 24-14.

GYM GAMES: On Saturday, the 17th of November, shuttle-ball was played in the gym. Those representing the Seniors were: White i, Wood, Robertson i, Poole i and Watson ii. We lost both our matches. The scores were 3-6 and 5-6.
The junior inter-house shuttle-ball matches took place on the 24th of November. Those representing Craven were: Wight, Baird, Bowen and Fawcett. We came second.

THE MARATHON: The marathon cup was won by Craven. There was a new course of eight and a half miles. We won comparatively easily, with a 52-point lead over the second house. The outstanding runners in the Seniors were White i and Poole i, who came first and second respectively. Others who ran extremely well were Wood 4th, Watson ii 5th, Hutchinson 6th, and Bradley llth. In the Juniors Birkbeck 3rd, and Fawcett, 6th, put up a fine show.
Those representing the House were:

Seniors
White i Robertson i Poole i White ii
Henderson ii Watson ii Wood Hutchinson
King i Bradley McLachlan Docherty

Juniors
Poole ii Fawcett Gibson ii Birkbeck
Bowen Swale Cherry Wallace
  Warburton Johnson Wright

SPORTS DAY: Craven did extremely well on Sports Day by coming a close second to Lancaster. The members who deserve special note are Fawcett, White i and Watson ii. Fawcett won all but one of the events he entered for, and thus won the junior Victor Ludorum. White i won the mile, the 880 yards, the 440 yards, and came 2nd in the 220 yards. Watson ii won the high jump, which was a fine effort.
FORM ORDERS: In the form orders Docherty and Wight came in the first three in the Upper IV. Warburton represented Craven well in the Lower IV, coming first once and second twice. In Remove Rigby and Swale came in the first three.

PANCAKE SCRAMBLE: The annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Scramble did not take place this year, owing to the bad weather.

CRICKET: We were rather outclassed, being beaten easily in both matches. Against Lancaster, Craven were all out for 25, whilst Lancaster got 109, declared. In the second match Craven got 49 all out, and York were all out 66.

It remains only for me to thank all the members of the house for their support, and wish them success in the coming year. I also thank York and Lancaster for giving us such good opposition.
