Craven House Report 1964

This year we set out with one object in view, to win as many cups as possible, as well as doing well in other things. We have had one or two House competitions which did not involve cups. In the Christmas term we had an inter-House quiz. We were not very successful, but although not so good at general knowledge we went into Mr. Pott's record quiz and eating contest determined to eat everybody out of house and home.
The Craven team consisted of White, Meldrum, Baker, Bowen, Watson, Kraunscoe (not by the way the fattest six in the house). In the record quiz we held our own, then we settled down to the real work, eating. After we had polished off pints of orange juice, gobbled whole loaves of bread, scoffed red hot macaroni and tomato sauce, shovelled away masses of gooey red jelly like stuff, we discovered that we had won. Meldrum and Kraunscoe were seen contentedly licking their lips afterwards.

Both the Senior and junior Rugby teams did well. The Senior scrum worked very well., they used their weight well and their forward rushes were usually successful. Watson led the scrum effectively. Fawcett was consistent throughout the season, also Bowen and Wood. Swale led the junior team very well. From being a bit of a rabble at first, the team looked as if it could have beaten York given another game. Rigby, Birkbeck, and Baird also played well. It was due to the work and practice of everyone, both seniors and juniors that we won the Rugby Cup this year.

The Marathon was keenly contested. Although we probably did have the strongest team, everybody had to run this year, which upset some. However, everyone tried hard, and we won the cup.

The House Points Cup has usually been a good gauge as to the real abilities of the House in every sphere, this year however, it has been rather more like a "tidy dormitory" cup, and we don't seem to have had the tidiest dormitories!

Cricket and Athletics are the two chief items for us in the Summer term. We were all set to win the Sports cup. Unfortunately our juniors did not do too well. Fawcett broke the Senior High jump record, and as a whole the Seniors did well. We only played one cricket match, that was against Lancaster. We managed to get Lancaster out for 57 ' and our batting was quite good, we declared at 59 for seven. Wood must receive the credit for captaining the cricket team.

On the whole everyone has done well this year. There have always been plenty of volunteers for the various sports. It has not been necessary to "press-gang" anyone into anything. Finally, I must thank G. Poole and P. Wood, for their support, also Reed, McLachlan, Watson, Hutchinson, Henderson and everyone else in the House. To those not leaving: Keep it up!
