Lancaster House Report
1957 |
|
This has been a great year for Lancaster, for although
losing most of the house competitions, the spirit of the
house has been raised higher and higher at every defeat.
The first house competition during the Autumn term was the
boxing. This took place at 6.30 p.m. on the 20th October,
1956. It was an unforgettable night, but every fight was
well and sportingly fought. The competitors from Lancaster
were: Jerome, Baker ii, S. Rowan-Robinson, Ardern, Morgan,
Patterson and Khan. After a hard struggle Lancaster drew
with Craven having 17 points each.
|
Rugger: As in the previous year, our team was
lacking in speed and weight. The conditions of the ground
were terrible and the ball very heavy and slippery. Our
first match was against York in which Mussa and Greenep
each scored a terrific try. York however were a better
team and beat us 17-6. We then played Craven and after a
very enjoyable game unluckily lost 3-0. Our juniors did
very well beating York 6-0, but losing against Craven by
3-0. During the house competitions in the following term
however, Lancaster did considerably better. We played York
first and in the first few minutes it seemed that York
were going to walk away with a win, but Broomfield finding
a loose ball dribbled through a few forwards, picked it up
and scored a magnificent try. From then on we were on top
and in the second half the house captain scored two tries,
one of which was beautifully converted by Thompson. The
final score was 11-3. In this match Lamour, Mussa,
Broomfield, Masters, Rowan-Robinson i and Howsepian proved
themselves worthy of the house. After a few minutes rest
we played Craven. This was a very good match in which
after a hard struggle we lost 11-3. In the juniors
Lancaster beat York, but were just beaten by Craven.
Ardern, Khan, Pickard I., Hanson and Holmes played very
well.
|
Soccer: In the house competitions we lost both to
Craven and York, 2-0 and 1-0. We were unlucky not to
beat York and owing to the state of the ground our small
forwards had little chance of showing their talent.
Mussa and Arden played well and our team on the whole
put up a very good show.
|
Marathon: Conditions were ideal for this race and
everyone in Lancaster was going to "Have a go." The
juniors set off first, then the middle school, and finally
the seniors. Coupe ran a fine race and came in second in
the juniors. Khan, Holmcs and Hanson also did well in the
Middle School. In the seniors Lancaster had 5 runners home
in the first 12 and were unlucky not to win the team
event. Here I especially wish to congratulate all the
members for trying their best and giving everything they
had for the house.
|
The house competitions during the Summer term were
athletics and cricket.
|
Athletics: On sports day all the members of the
house not taking part cheered and encouraged our runners.
Broomfield and Thomas ran the mile magnificently. In the
middle and junior school, Holmes, Pallister, Arden, Coupe,
Turner, Freeman and Watmough gave their best for the house
and did extremely well.
|
Cricket: Lancaster played Craven and scored 38
runs. Craven then went into bat and scored 39 for 3
declared. Masters stumped well.
|
In the basic house points Lancaster is in second position
with only two points behind York.
|
Finally, I wish to congratulate both Craven and York for
the magnificent and sporting show that they put up during
the whole year.

A. SEDAGHAT (House Captain). |
