Lancaster House Report 1959

This. I am sorry to say, is my last term at Eshton. It has been a great pleasure to captain Lancaster during the past four years, and I am very grateful to all members of the house for their neverfailing support. We have had many exciting encounters with York and Craven this year. Competition has been keen, and the spirit of Lancaster truly great.

RUGGER: At the beginning of the season, the senior team started off very well, but had mixed success towards the end. Our highest score was 23-nil, in a match against Craven. Schofield i, playing as prop., scored many brilliant tries. Thomas was very effective as a hooker, and for the first time in many seasons the backs managed to move the ball after it had been passed out from the scrum. Bushell, who unfortunately missed some of the matches owing to injury, played a very important role as scrum leader in the games in which he took part. In the second row we had Wood and Morgan, and it was mostly due to the effort put into shoving by these two that the ball was able to emerge from the scrum. Wood scored sorne delightful tries, and Morgan, who had very little experience, had the right idea of what to do when he had the ball in his possession. "It takes quite a lot to stop 'jet' once he is on the move," I heard one of the opposing players remark one day. Ernrey played back with astonishing zeal ! Whenever there was a loose scrum Embrey was there in the thick of it pulling, shoving, heeling and shouting slogans ! Batty was a great help in the lines-out, and the loose scrum.

H. Smith and Hanson played as wing forwards, but found little to do, as the opposing back line rarely got moving properly. At scrum half we had Hollingworth, who was a very useful member of the team. His quick thinking, kicking and passing saved many tries from being scored against us. Ardern, playing at centre threequarter, was our kicker. He converted many deciding goal-kicks and gained much ground by touch kicking. Pallister and Masters played as wings. They didn't really see much of the ball in many ?f the games, but Pallister showed how fast he could be when once, in a game against Craven, he received the ball and shot off to the line in a 100 yard dash, leaving everyone standing and astounded. Masters played with great ferocity and had some very nice runs on the wing. Hitchcox and Moug played as full back and centre-threquarter respectively. Although very much lacking in experience, they played hard, and I am sure they will be of considerable value to Lancaster in the coming year. The junior team played magnificently all through the season and had some very good wins.

CROSS COUNTRY: On a warm sunny afternoon in the spring term, our cross country team, comprising A. Sedaghat, J. Masters, Thomas, Hanson, Ardern, Hollingworth, Moug, Coupe, Smith, H., and Wood, took the field with confidence. The race was started by the firing of a "flare," and off we went on our agonizing journey. Half an hour of hard running on roads, fields, through woods and ravines, brought us back to the school. The runners in Lancaster arrived in the following order: Sedaghat (2nd), Moug (3rd), Thornas (5th), J. Masters (6th), Ardern (9th), Hanson (15th), Hollingworth (18th), Coupe (20th), Smith H. (22nd).
The race was a brilliant piece of teamwork, which deservedly won us the Marathon Cup.

GYM. GAMES: On the Saturday evenings in the Autumn and Spring terms, gym. house competitions took place. These were in the form. of basketball and handball. In the basketball the senior team had a fine set of games, beating York 4-2 and Craven 5-2. In the handball the senior team drew with York, 2-2, but was beaten by Craven, 3-2. The middles team, comprising Jones i (capt.), Emery, Inman, Moss, Geary and Arown were unfortunately beaten by both York and Craven 3-0 and 4-1 respectively. Our junior toam: Knapper (capt.), Watmough, Lloyd, Baker ii, French and Ellis, had a delightful game with York, whorn they beat 5-0. After a very close and exciting game, Craven just managed to win, the score being 5-4.

BOXING: In the house boxing, held on a Saturday evening in December, 1958, Thomas, a member of Lancaster House, won the "Best Loser's" Cup. All other members of our house who took part fought very well.

INTER-HOUSE QUIZZES: On Sunday, the 12th October, 1958, was held an Inter-House Quiz-the first of its kind for some years. Lancaster emerged as the top house. Following this up, we had two more successes, in tile Inter-House "20 Questions" competitions. Finally it was proved that all "brains" abide in this house of ours, when M. RowanRobinson won the "Brain of Eshton" contest.

PANCAKE SPECIAL: The night before Shrove Tuesday tension was mounting in the Lancaster dormitories. Plans, theories, hypotheses, were being propounded by one and all for the forthcoming pancake scramble. At 2.15 p.m., the next day, the participants gathered on the front field, eagerly awaiting the sticky pancake. Suddenly the whistle blew, the biceps of a member of the staff were brought into action, and up went the pancake like a flying saucer. It seemed to hover in the air, afraid of descending into the eagerly awaiting hands of the boys. But what goes up must come down, and so the pancake began to descend with increasing velocity. Up jumped the boys, and the one-minute struggle began. The results were as follows:
Winner of the Senior Pancake Scramble-Burrell (York).
Winner of the Middle School Pancake Scramble-Emery (Lancaster).
Winner of the Junior Pancake Scramble-White ii (Craven).

ATHLETIC: After the first leg of the heats. Lancaster was ahead in points. However, we were unable to keep on top, and were soon overtaken by both Craven and York. On Sports Day,Atiring which the finals were run off, Lancaster made a very commendable effort to catch up. We managed to gain more points than York, but Craven was too far ahead. The senior 4 x 400 yards relay team (Bushell, Schofield, Hollingworth and Masters) broke their previous year's record. Inm2n i shared the high jump cup with Rogers, with a record jump of 4 ft. 7 in.

SWIMMING: Here, as in the previous year, we were just beaten by Craven (100 points to our 96). Notable swimmers in our house were Schofield, Thomas, Moss and Watmough.

HOUSE CUP: Lancaster has won the "House Cup" three times during the past four years. We have also won it this year. This is a remarkable achievement, credit for which must go to all members of the house.

A. SEDAGHAT (House Captain).
