AUTUMN TERM |
RUGBY: Throughout the Autumn and Easter Terms House
Matches were played every Friday. Both the Senior and the
Junior results went towards the Rugby Cup.
Lancaster had an exceptionally good season. The juniors, under
the able captaincy of Cocks, were never defeated. The whole
team played extremely well, but particular mention must be
made of Cocks, Watmough, Abrahams and Merry; also Naylor, who
joined us in the Easter Term and soon proved a useful member
of the team. For the Seniors it was no less a glorious season.
The
team consisted of: Sayers (Capt.), Moss, Buckley, Jerome,
Bushell, McGuffle, Cousins, Turner, Ellis, Snape, Knapper,
Fawcett, Atkinson, Cram and Bridge. Although outclassed in
every match, we managed to hold our own on all occasions. Two
matches were won and one drawn. Even in defeat the team played
hard, and the opposing sides had hardly-won victories. The
whole team showed much enthusiasm, but special mention must be
made of Moss, Buckley and Bridge, who formed the nucleus of
the team.
Lancaster 9 pts., York 8 pts.
Perhaps the most exciting match of the term was the
York Lancaster match. All concerned played at full pressure for
the whole game, the results of this effort being felt for some
time after.
York opened the scoring with a try which was converted.
Half-way through the first half Moss made a sensational
breakthrough, and scored for Lancaster. At the beginning of
the second half York scored again, making the score 8-3. The
gap in points was considerably lessened when Buckley made a
surprise attack with the forwards and bulldozed himself over
the line. just before the final whistle Lancaster were awarded
a penalty kick just inside the York hal£ The angle was narrow
and the ball wet and heavy. However, Fawcett pulled off the
seemingly-impossible, and scored. Thus the match closed with a
9-8 victory.
Lancaster 35 pts., Craven 0 pts. junior Game.
In the first two minutes of the game Watmough went through to
score a try under the posts, which was converted by Baker ii.
This was followed shortly by another try, scored by Sherwood.
At half-time the score was 18-0 after two tries by Baker ii
and Cocks, with a conversion by Pallister. After half-time
Watson iii and Merry i went through to add two tries to the
score. One of these was converted by Watmough. When the final
whistle went two more tries had been scored. Total score for
the game was 35 points.

TABLE TENNIS: Two sets of Table Tennis matches were
held in the Assembly Room on 29th October. Cousins, Denny and
Bushell, representing Lancaster, put up a good fight, but the
honours were won by Craven.
|
|
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ: Those taking part in the
preliminary round of the Quiz were Sayers, Moss, Fawcett,
Rowan-Robinson, Jerome and Streeting. Fawcett and
Rowan-Robinson went on to the final, where they finished as
first equal with Craven.
|
|
GYM GAMES: During this term and the next four sets of
Gym games were held. One team was taken from Shell and
Remove and the other from the two Fourth Forms.
Teams: Cocks, Abrahams, Swales, Chapman, Watson, Peate;
Watmough, Baker, Merry, Ellis, Currie, Bridge.
The teams played extremely well and Lancaster won by a
substantial margin.
|
|
EASTER TERM |
RUGBY: The House Rugger matches continued. Lancaster 15
pts., York 0 pts. This match was the last of the series and
upon its result rested the securing of the Cup. Lancaster took
the lead with a quick try by Buckley; this was quickly
followed by those of Moss and Snape. All three were converted
by Faweett. Lancaster held the lead gained and won 15-0.
Owing to the spirit with which both teams played throughout
Lancaster was able to win the Rugby Cup for the year.
|
|
MARATHON: The Inter-House Marathon was held on 31st
March. The organisation was rather different this year. Two
teams of eight were chosen to represent each house.
Teams : (Senior) Sayers, Coupe, Moss, French, Jerome,
Atkinson, Watmough, Bridge.
(Junior) Bagshaw (Capt.), Ellis, Chapman, Veitch, Mico,
Watson, Pallister, Lloyd.
Both teams ran extremely well and surprised
everyone-including themselves !-by winning the Cup. |
|
PANCAKE SCRAMBLE: In this event Moss and Fawcett formed an
alliance. When Moss climbed on Fawcett's shoulders the
combined height was astronomical ! Moss was thus able to
catch the pancake and defend it for the required time.
Eventually he emerged to claim the winning prize of two
shillings and sixpence.

SUMMER TERM |
|
As this report is going to be printed before the end of the
term it is only possible to make a survey of what is going
to happen. There are still cups to be won ; among them are
those for Cricket, the Sports and Swimming. Lancaster stand
a good chance of winning these, particularly the last two.
In the Sports we are greatly relying upon the athletic
prowess of French, who we hope will win the Victor Ludorum
as well. |
I
would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the
members of Lancaster for the way in which they have supported
me and the spirit which they have shown in all House
activities. I hope they will continue in the same way next
year under a new House Captain. Lancaster has been handicapped
in having only the one Senior Prefect in the House; much work
fell upon the House Prefects. In connection with this I would
like to thank Moss, who has most ably helped me to organise
and run the House. We have had many encounters with Craven and
York, and I would like to thank the House Captains of both
these Houses for making the Inter-House Matches enjoyable in
victory or defeat. I wish Lancaster the best of luck in the
future.
