Lancaster House Report 1963

This has been one of Lancaster's most successful years for some time. We have already won the Rugby and Sports competitions, and are leading in points for the House and Work Cups. The cricket and swimming events are to be held sometime in the near future.

AUTUMN TERM
RUGBY: Six house matches were played during the Autumn Term, and the great determination of both the senior and junior teams enabled Lancaster to win the cup.
Results:
  Played Won Drawn Lost
Seniors 6 2 0 4
Juniors 6 5 1 0

The juniors played exceptionally well all season. They were never defeated and only once were held to a draw by York. In all the six matches the team scored nearly 100 points. Watson iii, Peate ii, Hargreaves and Naylor played very well all the season and much of the credit must go to them.
Leading players were Swales, Chapman, Hargreaves, Peate ii, Watson iii (captain), Bushell ii, Sutcliffe, Naylor, Pallister, Haighton, Whitely, Naddell, Langford and Pearson.
Although the seniors were much lighter than either Craven or York, the spirit and enthusiasm of the members enabled the team to
Although the seniors were much lighter than either Craven or win two of their six matches. Throughout the season Snape, Gibson i and Bridge played very well.
Leading players were: Cocks, McGuffie, Jerome (captain), Sherwood, Gibson i, Bushell i, Snape, Bridge, Cousins, Turner, Watmough, S. Rowan-Robinson, and Knapper.

GYM GAMES: On Saturday, November 17th, games of Skittle Ball were played in the gym between the seniors of each house. Bridge, Cousins, Bushell i and Snape represented Lancaster.
Although not appearing to be the strongest side the team-work and apirit of Lancaster enabled them to win, but only by a small margin.
Results: Lancaster 6, Craven 5.
Lancaster 9, York 8.
On Saturday, November 24th, it was the juniors turn to prove that they were too good for both Craven and York. Watson iii (captain), Sutcliffe, Naylor, Bushell ii and Hargreaves played well to beat York 6-5 and Craven 8-6.

FORM ORDERS: The points gained in the Form Orders go towards the Hay Cup for work.Tweddell (Upper IV), Watson iii (Lower IV), Pearson and McMillan (Shell) and Stordy (Remove). They all gained valuable points to give Lancaster the lead at the end of the first term.

HOUSE POINTS: The Basic House Points gained every week are for the House Cup. At the end of the Autumn Term Lancaster was in the lead with 4% points. Craven had 281 and York 24. Although Sutcliffe and Pearson gained many of the house points there was a first-class effort by the whole house.

EASTER TERM
Unfortunately as the weather was so bad there was no more inter-house Rugby and no Pancake Scramble.

MARATHON: This was rather a disappointing day as far as Lancaster was concerned; not only because half the senior team lost the enthusiasm and team.spirit that enabled Lancaster to win the Rugby Cup the previous term but because we lost the cup as well. A few members of the senior team did not do their best. If they had Lancaster might have won the cup. The junior marathon was run first and Lancaster built up a lead of 60 points over the other houses.
Lancaster, 126 points.
Craven, 66 points. York, 56 points. York, 56 points.
But some of the seniors let the house down by obtaining only 68 points. Credit, however, must go to Craven seniors who gained 180 points.
Lancaster, 68 points. Craven, 180 points.
York, 93 points.
Total points:
Craven, 246. Lancaster, 194. York, 149.

FORM ORDERS: Lancaster did not so as well in these form orders as the previous term, but were still in the lead although the margin was reduced.

HOUSE POINTS: Sutcliffe, Pearson and a new boy Parr, kept on gaining valuable house points and Lancaster were still in the lead at the end of the Easter Term.

SUMMER TERM
SPORTS: For the first time in 5 years Lancaster won the Sports Cup. This was a really great achievement by all concerned.
Lancaster started Sports Day with a lead in the House Standard Points over the other two houses.
Lancaster, 87; Craven, 62; York, 56.
Everyone made a first class effort on Sports Day.
Naddell ran a fine race to win and set up a new school record for the junior 100 yards, and Watson iii broke the record for the junior shot.
In the junior mile Sutcliffe went straight into the lead and kept that position for the whole race. Naylor ran a good race to finish third.
Lancaster did not attain a place in the senior mile although Lloyd was just beaten into fourth place.
In the senior relay our team ran well to beat the two opposing teams, but the juniors could only manage second place against York.
The Tug of War was one of the most exciting events. After Craven had knocked York out they faced Lancaster. Both teams were about equal and could not move each other, but after a long hard battle Lancaster triumphed and just managed to pull Craven over. Although Lancaster won the sports cup praise must go to both Craven and York who put up a really sporting fight throughout.
At the time of going to press there are still a few cups to be won including cups for cricket and swimming. It is impossible to say what the outcome will be, as all three houses have extremely fine teams-we shall hope for the best.
Before ending this report I would like to thank all the members of the House for making my last year at Eshton a most memorable one. I would especially like to thank the senior prefects, Jerome and Bridge for helping me to run and organise the house.

Finally, I would like to congratulate both Craven and York especially their House Captains on the magnificent and sporting show they have given throughout the year.

A. P. ROBINSON.
