York House Report 1959

It was with deepest regrets that we said good-bye to J. Vaughan, who was our house captain for the last two years.
We welcomed J. Knaggs as our new captain in the Autumn Term.

On the whole it has been a very good year for York. We won the Rugby Cup, the Boxing, shared the Cricket Cup with Craven, and two Victor Ludorums.

Challenge Cups : Knaggs, 1 mile ; Knaggs, half-mile ; Leakey, High Jump; Haighton, High Jump.
The following records were broken by Yorkists

We were, of course, very sorry, but at the same time, glad to see Craven win the Sports Cup.

SWIMMING SPORTS: 10th July, 1959.We improved on last year's total by four points, but were unfortunately last again. It was a shame that our juniors were not up to the standard of the juniors of Craven and Lancaster.
CRICKET: The Inter-House cricket matches were played on Monday and Tuesday evenings, 13th and 14th July. Seniors : We played against Lancaster on Monday. Due to good bowling by Porter and Knaggs, we had Lancaster out for 42. Knaggs and Beckwith opened, and had a very good stand of 34. We then went on to score the rest, winning by five wickets.

The following day we played against Craven. Craven batted first, and with a struggle managed to score 60. Knaggs and Beckwith opened again, and scored 21. Then slowly the runs came, and we won by four wickets. Rafique Dawood, fielding at point, took two catches against Lancaster, and Raz. Dawood, fielding at silly mid-on, took two good catches against Craven. Beckwith played well as stumper.

Juniors : Played against Craven on Monday. Unfortunately, they were all out for 18. Craven soon reached our total for the loss of three wickets.

On Tuesday they played against Lancaster. Lancaster batted first, and scored 81. We went in and had a very good start, being 59 for 1, due to Atkinson, who scored 37. We went on to win by five wickets.
The teams were
Seniors: Knaggs, Nanji, Beckwith, Raf. Dawood, Raz. Dawood, Stroud, Riley, Rudd, Hainsworth, Ward and Porter.
Jjuniors : Williamson (capt.), Atkinson, Jenkinson, Leakey, Gillam, Robinson, Allan, Hall, Hubbard, Skelton, and Palmer.
Before ending this report, 1 would like to extend to Knaggs, Nanji, and Beckwith, our sincere thanks for all that they have done for the house during the past year.
The house thought it a good idea to buy them something with which we hope they will remember York.
We bought the following:
For Knaggs-Travelling alarm clock.
For Nanji-a pair of gold cuff-links.
For Beckwith-a Parker slimfold pen.
RAFIQUE DAWOOD.
(House Secretary).
I have been house captain for only a year, but in that time, every Yorkist has given me more support than I would have ever wished for, in school and on the games field, both in the summer and winter sports. Our rivals, Lancaster and Craven, have been very tough opposition, which is no doubt good. I cannot find words to thank the house captains of these two houses for all they have done for me. It is also difficult to say how much the house will miss Nanji and Beckwith, the two senior prefects in the house, who are excellent examples of determination and of success in school and on the games fields. These two have been backed up by five of the most efficient house prefects in the business, Raz. Dawood, Leakey, J. Rowan-Robinson and Burrell who have all helped me no end. Raf. Dawood has become an integral part of the house, as house secretary. He is a great asset to the house. The juniors are always the ones who are left out of everything. If their house spirit remains the same until they are seniors, I pity Lancaster and Craven in years to come. Wherever I go I know that I shall never be so well treated as I have been by my Yorkists. I shall miss them very much. Raz. Dawood is taking over as new house captain, and I hope the Yorkists treat him as they have treated me.
J. A. KNAGGS.
