York House Report 1961

This year, no doubt, York has had one of its most successul years. We have already won the Rugger Cup (third year running), but failed in the Marathon Cup by six points, and are well in the running for the Swimming, Sports, Cricket and Work Cups, which are soon to be competed for.

Facts and Figures for the Year.
Autumn Term, 1960.
RUGBY: In this and the following term, we competed for the Jenkinson Rugger Cup. A total of ten house matches were held of which three went towards the cup. There were three teams, the seniors, juniors and the House team. The seniors played three matches and were successful in all, beating Craven 18-0, and Lancaster 29-0 and 22-8. The juniors played four matches and had a 50% record.
There were three matches with the house team and we were successful in all, beating Craven 22-6 and 26-3, and Lancaster 19-6. Robinson did an excellent job as captain. We scored a total of 67 points against 15 points, of which Skelton scored 27 points.
The House team consisted of: Henderson (full back), Wynn (right wing), Stanton, Robertson (centres), Skelton (fly-half), Robinson, capt. (scrum-half), Drabble (left wing), Edwards (lock), Gibbins, Blythe (wing forwards), Hall, Hubbard (second row), Barrett (hooker), Gillam, Allan (props).

York 22 pts. v. Craven 6 pts. This match was played under ideal conditions and soon after the whistle we were three up, with Skelton touching down. A few minutes later Allan touched down and then Skelton touched down, and Gillarn converted. We then eased off and Craven were very lucky to touch down just before the whistle went for half-time. The score then was York 11, Craven 3.
The second half was very much the same with us well on top. Skelton touched down twice and Gillam converted one. Robertson made a 50 yard run and touched down. In between ou r tries Craven touched down once.

York 19 pts. v. Lancaster 6 Pts. The following week we played Lancaster and did not have as good a start. Lancaster were soon on the attack and scored. We retaliated and before half-time had esta ' blished a good lead, with Skelton touching down three times and Gillam converting twice. At half-time we were leading 13-6.
In the second half Lancaster held us. We, however, scored twice, Skelton and Robertson and Lancaster touched down once. Robertson, in the dying minutes of the game picked up the ball from our line and ran the whole length of the pitch to score.

York 26 pts. v. Craven 3 pts. This was the final match of the season and we had every intention of increasing our score and decreasing Craven's. We were successful. Henderson, at full-back, played extremely well to help keep Craven off our line. Within the first fifteen minutes we had touched down three times, Gillarn (twice and Gibbins. Gillam converted one try. At half-time we were leading 11 -0.
In the second half, Craven touched down for their first and only try. We retaliated with three quick tries (two conversions) by Gibbins, Hubbard and Allan. Gibbins touched down again for his third try and in the last minute Skelton broke away and scored bringing the final total to York 30 pts., Craven 3 pts.
All the above matches were thoroughly enjoyable and it was a great pleasure to see everyone giving of his best. The Headmaster presented the cup and also three bottles of cider, which needless to say were enjoyed by the team to the last drop.

HOUSE QUIZZES. There was a House Quiz held on the 23rd October, 1960, the winners of which were to compete in the finals later. The teams consisted of:

On the 27th November, 1960, the finals were held, and our finalists came second, equal to Lancaster, in the seniors. Our juniors were, on the other hand, well in front, and so we emerged the winners.

SPRING TERM
RUGBY: The House rugger matches continued as reported above.

MARATHON: The main event in this term is the Marathon, which was held on Friday, 24th March, 1961.
There were two changes from previous years. The course was slightly changed and lengthened, to make it really cross-country. The other change was that the whole house ran the whole distance. There were not two groups like in previous years when the seniors and juniors ran different courses.
We did exceptionally well, coming second to Craven. It was bad luck on us that Rudd was unable to run that day. We were only six points behind Craven. Porter came in first, Baker 3rd, Edwards 9th and R. Dawood 16th, out of a total number of 150 runners. Nearly everyone in the House came within the time limit of 36 minutes and so earned one bonus point.
Result: Second to Craven with 85 points.

PANCAKE SCRAMBLE: The Annual Pancake Scramble took place on Shrove Tuesday. This year Shrove Tuesday fell on the 14th February, 1961, and so, at 2.15 p.m. on Shrove Tuesday a total number of 36 boys in their rugger kit with plimsolls were assembled on the front field. The juniors scrambled first. Mr. Howie flexed his muscles and sent the soggy pancake flying through the air and then onto the boys. The winner, Watson, was awarded 2s. 6d., and it was Mr. Regel's turn to exercise his muscles. The pancake came down and R. Dawood secured the second largest bit but to no avail, because only the winners counted.
Teams :
Seniors: R. Dawood, A. R. Dawood, K. Baker, D. Porter, Wilhamson, P. Atkinson.
juniors: Henderson, Stanton, Robertson, Prentice, Halliwell, Barrett.

FORM ORDERS: Two Form Orders, as usual, were held, one half-way through the term and the other at the end of term. We did not do very well in the first one, getting our lowest total ever. In the second Form Orders, however, we recaptured our lead with about three first places.

2nd Form Order . . . 37 17 18

SUMMER TERM
At the time of going to press, there have been no inter-house activities. Four cups have to be competed for. They are the Sports Cup, Swimming Cup, Cricket Cup and the Work Cup.

SPORTS: Sports Day will be held on July 5th. We hope to beat the jinx and win the cup.

SWIMMING: The Swimming Sports will be held at Moor View Baths, Skipton, on Friday, July 7th. We have every intention of retaining the cup.

CRICKET: The Cricket House matches will be played in the last week of the term.

Before I finish my report I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the whole house from the School and House Prefects to the lowest junior for making my last year at Eshton a happy and memorable year. The House has at all times supported me, and I know I shall never forget the past year. The house spirit has never wavered and has always been excellent. This has been shown more than anywhere else, on the rugger field during the house matches. Even those members who were not playing were down at the field cheering the team on. J. Rowan-Robinson is also leaving and the house will be losing one of its most faithful members. Before ending I would like to wish the house greater glory in years to come.

RAFIQUE DAWOOD,
(House Captain).
