York House Report 1962

AUTUMN TERM
RUGBY: Although we had two good terms with Ward as Captain and generally in charge of practices, we did not retain the Cup, but came a close second to Lancaster.
The following played in the team during Autumn and Easter Terms: Ward, a very determined player, as outside centre. Gillam, at inside centre, was always quick off the mark. Robertson, who is a promising player, played right wing. Drabble played left wing and tried very hard in most matches. Robinson iii as hooker played exceptionally well.
Baxter and Blyth both played as props and always gave of their best, while Allan and Hubbard provided a good push in the second row. Williamson, playing back, was at all times an excellent player. Gibbins and Pugh played as wing forwards with much daring. Sim, at scrum-half, showed plenty of guts, while Skelton, in the standoff position, had a very good year. Boon, at full-back, showed himself to be a promising player.
During this term and the following one we played five rounds of matches. In the first three rounds the Seniors beat Lancaster 12-3, 9~8 and 21-0, and lost to Craven 14-0, 12-6, and 9-6. The Juniors beat Craven 18-0 and 20-8, but lost to Lancaster 12-6, 9-0 and 15-8, and to Craven 6-3.
York 21 pts., Lancaster 0 pts.
This game turned out to be excellent in that our team played as a team. Gillam, as inside-centre, and Skelton as stand-off, provided a spearhead that kept the impetus of the attack going all the time. This resulted in some good three-quarter movements. The scrum, led by Williamson, did most of the work with Gibbins as wing~forward, who scored two tries.
York 18 pts., Craven 0 pts. Junior Game, Round 1.
The junior team consisted of Stanton (Capt.), Bagshaw, Franklin, Jackson, King, Coupland, Stephenson ii, Birkenshaw, Halliwell, Godfrey, Robertson, Henderson i, Wynn, Feather and Watson iv. The match was played on a muddy field and the backs found it difficult to handle the ball. York, however, having the bigger forwards, were soon on top. The Craven defence resisted strongly but could not hold off our attack; by half-time we were six points up. In the first minute of the second hald Robertson ran half the field to score under the posts. After this Craven collapsed, and York went on to secure a comfortable though hardly-won victory.

GYM GAMES: These were held under the supervision of Mr. Howie this term. Two sets were held on October 7th and November 18th. In these two sets where the games were Handball and Volley-ball, we came respectively third and second.
Teams : (First set) .. Edwards i (Capt.), Robertson ii, Stanton, Henderson ii, Halliwell, Prentice. (Second set) Wynn (Capt.), Feather, Cooper, Boon, Neal i, and King ii.

TABLE TENNIS: The Tournament on October 29th was organised by Mr. Regel and Mr. Brady. We came third in both Junior and Senior. In the latter Rudd and Williamson played, and in the Junior Neal i and King ii.

GENERAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ: The House Quiz was held on Saturday, 12th November. The teams were: Senior-Williamson, Robinson iii, Carlile, Hubbard, Gillam, Sim. junior-Siffith ii, Wynn, Neal i, Barber, Godfrey, Boon. Robinson iii and Hubbard got into the Senior Finals, eventually being third, while Wynn and Neal i went through to the junior Final and came second.

EASTER TERM
RUGBY: In the last two rounds we beat Lancaster 9-0, but lost to Craven 12-8 and 12-8, and to Lancaster 15-0. The juniors beat Craven 9-0 and 9-0, and lost to Lancaster 3-0 and 12-8.

MARATHON: This was held on 31st March, over the old Senior Marathon course. Although we had first place in both Senior and junior, the result was based upon the placings of each runner; thus we came a close second. The teams were :
Senior: Baker (Capt.), Rudd, Edwards i, Carlile, Baxter, Hubbard, Robinson iii, Gibbins.
Junior: Prentice (Capt.), Coupland, Halliwell, Feather, Wynn, Robertson ii, King ii and Neale ii.

PANCAKE SCRAMBLE: This was held on Shrove Tuesday, which this year fell on March 6th. We entered the usual team of biggest and toughest, but as far as the Seniors were concerned, without avail. The Junior event was won for us by Wynn, who secured the largest piece and was awarded two and sixpence and five house points.

TABLE TENNIS: The House Tournament was held on Sunday, February 14th. We entered the same team as in the Autumn and this time did better, coming First in the Junior and Third in the Senior.

GYM GAMES: The same teams played as in the Autumn. There were two sets. In the first, on February 14th, we came second ; in the, second, on March 18th, we were again second.

FORM ORDER: Although we only managed to get thirteen points in the First Form Order in February, we tied with Craven in the Second, with twenty-six points. This brought our complete total to 98 points, second to Craven, with 118 points.

SUMMER TERM.
We have not completed any of the usual summer Inter-House activities ; the Sports, Tennis, Cricket and Swimming. The Hay Cup for work has yet to be awarded.
Before closing my House Report 1 would like to thank my Senior Prefects and House Prefects for the loyal work they have both individually and as a body given towards the House. The members of the House deserve my thanks for their unfailing Housespirit, which has been shown in work and play.
I would like to wish my successor all the best and I hope that they support him as well as they have supported me.
