York House Report 1963

It is with great regret that we had to say goodbye to K. N. Baker at the end of last year but we welcomed J. Williamson, as our new house captain, with great enthusiasm.

CHRISTMAS TERM.
As always the first inter-house cup to be competed for is the Jenkinson Rugger Cup.
In previous years this competition has been carried on throughout both the Christmas and Easter terms but this year the competition was competed for only in the Christmas term. The Senior Team was as follows:
Henderson i (full back), Halliwell and Boon (wings), Robertson ii and Stephenson (centres), Burkinshaw (scrum-half), Franklin and Gibbins (wing forwards), Aspinall (lock forward), Williamson and Coupland (second row), Carlile and Jackson (prop forwards), Robinson iii (hooker).

SENIOR MATCHES.
York 11, Lancaster 5.
The tries were scored by Coupland and Robertson ii. Williamson converted one try and also kicked a penalty.

York 26, Craven 3.
Straight away York took the lead and Craven were soon disheartened. The people who scored the tries were Williamson, Franklin, Robertson ii and Gibbins scored two. Williamson converted four of the tries and also kicked a penalty. Near the end of the game Craven came back to life and after a good three-quarter movement they scored a try gaining three points.

York 8, Lancaster 9.
This was a most disappointing match for York but one that was well worth playing in. It was the only match that the seniors lost. Up till the very last minute of the game either team could have won. The tries were scored by Gibbins and Robertson ii one of which Williamson converted.

JUNIOR MATCHES.
York 3, Lancaster 26.
Lancaster juniors now seemed to have reached their form for it took a good all round effort to try and stop them especially in the scrum. By half-time the score was 20-0. Then York retaliated and kept the ball in their own half for most of the time. Lord scored our only try and towards the end Lancaster scored two more quick tries.

York 3, Craven 15.
Although both teams seemed equally matched Craven had a quicker team. This, like many other matches was a scrum game. It was not until York were 9-0 down that Fox scored a try in the second half. Craven then scored two tries giving the final score.

INTER-HOUSE GAMES.
On 17th November York seniors played Lancaster and Craven at Hand-ball. In the team were Williamson, Robinson iii, Gibbins and Robertson ii. York came second in the competition only one point behind Craven.

On 24th November York juniors played Lancaster and Craven at Hand-ball. The team consisted of Halliwell, King ii, Neal 8, Coupland and Frost. Unfortunately, this team lost to the other two houses by 3 points. In the competition they came third.

INTER-HOUSE QUIZ: This quiz was organised by Mr. Moon and four people were chosen to represent each house. Representing York were Robinson iii, Edwards i, Burkinshaw and Rix. The team turned out to be very successful, beating Lancaster by 43 points to 35, and Craven by 63 points to 38. The team picked most of their points up from their knowledge of music.

EASTER TERM
PANCAKE SCRAMBLE: For the first time we could not hold our annual pancake scramble because the ground was very hard. This was a great disappointment to all.

TABLE TENNIS: This year the school did not have any inter-house table tennis tournaments as we have had in previous years. So during the Easter term, we held out own knock-out competition. King ii beat Henderson i in the final.

THE SCHOOL MARATHON: During this year York has been lacking in Seniors. Also, when we came to the Marathon the school was having another epidemic. The team consisted of those boys who were not sick and they were Williamson, Franklin, Gibbins, Robinson iii, Carlile, Jackson, Hird, Edwards i and Prentice.
Edwards i came in 3rd and the rest of the team came in spread out in the first 24.
The juniors did quite well as Neal i came in 5th and Wickham, Bagshaw, Watson iv, Boon and Feather came in within the first 20.

SUMMER TERM
SPORTS DAY: On the 22nd June there was sports day. York who were the holders of the cup failed to retain it. There were some surprising results. Frost won the junior high jump but Edwards i produced the main surprise by coming 2nd in the 880. Another surprise was when Robertson ii came 2nd in the senior high jump. Neal i was our main contender for the Victor Ludorum but failed to win it. We were well represented in the seniors: Robertson ii came 2nd in three events and 3rd in another, Edwards i came 2nd in three events and 3rd in two events, and Williamson came 2nd in two events.

CRICKET: We still have the cricket cup to compete for but we have a good chance of winning it. We have a number of players who have represented the Ist XI on occasions and they are Gibbins, Burkinshaw, Robertson ii, Stephenson and Halliwell. It will be a great pity that Robinson ii will not be able to play and his batting and fielding will be missed.

We still have the swimming cup to compete for.

Next term you will have a new house captain. I hope you will support him as you have supported me.

J. WILLIAMSON.
