York House Report 1966

At the close of the Christmas term we were very sorry to lose our house captain, K. H. Burkinshaw. He was captain of the school and also captain of cricket during a very successful 1965 season. He is now studying languages abroad, and on behalf of the house I would like to wish him every success.

As the school year has not yet ended, we have not been able to compete for the sports or cricket cups. However, I am confident that in both events the house will not let me down. We have five full members of the I st XI cricket team in the house, namely, Neale (ii), Baty (i), Baty (ii), Rix and King, therefore both skill and experience will not be lacking. In the athletics field among many of our quality runners are: Fox, Neal (i), Wickham, Frost and Hepburn, all capable of great athletic feats.

My sincere congratulations must of course go to the York rugby team for winning the Rugby Cup. This is one of the fiercest competitions in the whole school year. The team was captained admirably by J. S. Fox who was also the Ist XV captain during the Easter term. The following played for York in the 65-66 season, Fox, Watson*, Gray*, Hepburn*, Holmes, Baty (i)*, Baty (ii)*, King, Grundy, Halliwell*, Twigge, Burkinshaw, Morrison, Neal (i)*, Neal (ii), Frost, Costelloc, TyIdesley, Rix, and Thompson. In the first round we beat Lancaster 18-0. And in the final we beat Craven 32-5. The game against Lancaster was scrappy but nevertheless enjoyed by all. We had a slow start against Craven but soon started playing as a team, tackling and passing well. After a good, hard, vicious game we emerged victorious.

At the end of the Easter term the annual marathon was held. York managed to gain second place. The whole house ran the marathon and I must congratulate those who conquered the gruelling 12 mile course. Those worthy of a special mention must be Neal (i) who came second, Wickham, who came third, and Hepburn who came fourth. I must mention my two companions Fox and Riddle, who were attired as if just returning from a Polar expedition. They faithfully brought up the rear on the pretext of helping the juniors.

1 would like to thank the house as a whole for their loyalty and efforts throughout the year. I would especially like to express my thanks to my Prefects, my senior prefects, Riddle and Fox who have supported and helped me and the house prefects who have served during the year.

Finally may I wish all members of the house every success for the future wherever they go and whatever they do.

R. G. NEALE, House Captain.
